Existence

CONCEPT

In a world that’s constantly moving forward, have we forgotten to pause and truly observe?

To see life—both human and nature—in its purest form. Observation means looking with intention, noticing both the smallest details and the bigger picture. While the world has advanced, the essence of humans and nature remains unchanged.

This concept preserves that foundation, translating it into timeless silhouettes with street-style adaptations—reflecting change while staying rooted in their core. It explores the physical and metaphorical similarities between humans and nature, highlighting their emotional and physical interactions, which will be expressed through prints and surface design.

CONCEPT EXPLORATION

Concept 1

Comparing their existence in terms of identity: Both a symbol of identity, no two could ever be identical or repeated. Both have intricate line movement and pattern.

Finger print and tree stump

The concept is to weave both the finger print and the stump together highlighting the uniqueness but also dabbling with their co-existence.

Their symbolic and metaphorical similarities being overlapped, thus creating a new existence.

Concept 2

Waves and heartbeat

The human heartbeat and waves share a rhythmic, life-sustaining quality. Like a steady heart, waves rise and fall in a natural pulse, sustaining life by moving nutrients. Both respond to external influences—heartbeats change with emotions and activity, while waves shift with tides and winds.

Both can be soothing or powerful—a steady heartbeat brings calm, like gentle waves, while rapid heartbeats or crashing waves signal intensity. They also connect to larger forces; the heart responds to the body’s needs, just as waves are shaped by the moon’s pull. Both symbolize movement, vitality, and the continuous flow of life.

Concept 3

Imperfections

The idea is to compare the spots on humans and animals that have a unique pattern, size and appearance. Often seen as freckles on humans and spots on animals.

Concept 4

Lines

Creases and lines that are formed over time through movement. Their placement is unique and symbolise the time that has passed.

Fine lines start as gentle ripples, like sand dunes shifting in the wind, barely noticeable at first. As years pass, they deepen, much like how the earth splits under the sun’s relentless heat.

Final swatch is developed by laser cutting
holes in fabric and attaching a contrast
fabric underneath

Both are nature’s imprints, marks of
experience—one on human skin, the other
on the land—etched by the elements and
the passage of time.

(Final swatch is developed using denim thread over uneven folded fabric)

Concept 5

Breaking and healing

Both nature and humans possess the remarkable ability to heal in different ways. The human body mends physical wounds just as the mind recovers from emotional distress. Similarly, nature regenerates—forests regrow after fires, rivers cleanse themselves, and ecosystems restore balance over time. Healing is an inherent process shared by both.

This idea is explored by attaching 2 pieces of fabric using threads, symbolising the concept of  breaking, healing and continuing.
